Internet of Things (IOT) Ecosystem Technology for Electric Vehicle Charging

Whilst high-powered battery technology and faster charging infrastructure are sometimes credited for increasing electric vehicle (EV) use and development, there is an invisible system that is playing a significant role in making EV driver’s experience seamless.

We know that the key to increasing EV adoption is not only the development of robust charging infrastructure, but the ability to remotely manage dispersed devices. 

That’s where the Internet of Things (IoT) comes in. IoT is a network of physical objects equipped with sensors and software that can exchange data with each other online. 

In the context of EV smart charging, IoT comprises of three key elements; charging equipment, mobile apps, and charging management platforms.  

IoT and Public Charging  

IoT can empower drivers to easily locate charging locations and check the current charging rate, reducing the friction of finding and planning their refueling experiences. Like reserving a restaurant, an EV charging app allows drivers to search for nearby stations, check availability, and book a slot based on battery capacity.  

After arriving at the public charger and connecting their phone to the infrastructure, the EVSE is prompted to transmit their data to an IOT cloud-based platform. The platform performs an authentication process on the consumer’s profile, which means they are granted secure billing transactions if affirmative.  Customers experience safe and secure payments through this system. 

Sensors equipped with monitoring functionalities continuously assess the operational status of charging equipment, including power delivery components, voltage stability, and charging station integrity. In the case of a malfunction, automated maintenance protocols are triggered. 

IoT and Energy Management 

A smart energy management system, built on IoT, is a significant step towards more efficient and environmentally conscious charging stations. These smart grids allow for real-time monitoring and optimise energy output and local demand and availability. Load forecasting is one of the most important processes that can increase the efficiency of a distribution network, regardless of whether it is public or privatized.
